AMD trademark protects Vega at 7 nanometers – may be called Vega II

In 2019, AMD will invest heavily in TSMC’s 7-nanometer technology, which in addition to increasing the transistor density enables higher energy efficiency and better performance. One of the first circuits to be released with the technology is Vega 20, which takes up space in the Radeon Instinct MI60 computing card.

It is now reported that in late November, AMD filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for second-generation Vega. The new logo looks like the original as the letter “V”, but the right side has two dashes that go through.

The lines are probably the number two with Roman numbering (II) and if this is the case, Vega at 7 nanometers is called Vega II. The fact that AMD has developed such a brand can also be seen as a sign that Vega II may be included in other series than Radeon Instinct, as the models MI60 and MI50 as previously shown have been without a logo.

The biggest news with the second generation Vega is just 7 nanometers, which gives higher clock frequencies than 14 nanometers for lower power consumption. AMD has also chosen to double the memory bus to a width of 4,096 bits, which together with 32 GB of HBM2 memory gives a theoretical bandwidth of 1 TB / s (1,024 GB / s).

AMD has promised to begin deliveries of the Radeon Instinct MI60 to selected customers before the end of the year. According to previous statements, the second generation Vega will not be released to consumers in the Radeon RX series.
