Chinese dock as a museum of the Ming-class submarine

Finnish PES-Architects has been selected in an international architectural competition to transform a historic dock in China into a submarine museum, which will be its central, most important element.

This official Shanghai Submarine Museum will be located on Dock Number Three of the Jiangnan Shipyard, part of the site that is currently being converted into parks and cultural facilities. It will connect, above all, the museum section of the building together with a submarine, which visitors will be able to enter directly through the docking bridge.

The ship will be the decommissioned Ming-class submarine, the secrets of which can be explored at many exhibitions. There will also be a number of attractions for relaxation – a restaurant, terrace or the dock itself, which can be filled with water.

The building forms a symbiosis with the submarine and hovers over the dock as a mysterious, intriguing facility with fantastic views of the river, dock and submarine. Glass, steel and wood create an elegant contrast to the rough textures of the museum dock.

Before it is put into operation, however, it must pass a first phase, which will be completed in early 2022, and will cover the 500 square meter building itself. The second phase is to be completed in 2023 and will add exhibition space and a restaurant to the infrastructure.
