The SMX-31 is a sperm whale inspired submarine

SMX-31

The French company has just shown a submarine project that is definitely different from those of the competition. It’s called the SMX-31 and the engineers were inspired by the sperm whale when designing it.

The submarine supports a range of unmanned vehicles, and can also serve as a mother ship for naval special forces. It is highly automated and requires only 15 people to operate. The ship has the appearance of a diving sperm whale. It has a hexagonal housing with built-in antennas and drives located at the stern. Thanks to the possibility of sending unmanned vehicles from the launcher, it can be used for infiltration of coastal areas and for terrain reconnaissance.

The SMX-31 has 46 torpedoes and missiles, including the F21 Artemis torpedo and the SCALP cruise missile. The latter is used, inter alia, by NATO during its mission in Syria. The ship itself is not large – it is about 70 meters long. He can work at sea for 3- to 45 days. The maximum speed is 20 knots.
