Cryengine will receive support for Vulkan and DirectX 12 during the autumn

Major game developers such as Id Software, Valve and Crystal Dynamics are at the forefront with support for new interfaces in their respective game engines, and now it’s time for Crytek. The company’s official product plan for Cryengine reveals when support for both DirectX 12 and Vulkan will be rolled out.

During the autumn, two major updates will come to the game engine. First out is version 5.2 with a high variety of additions, including support for DirectX 12, PhysX and the 2011 standard of the programming language C ++. Later comes version 5.3, which will also bring a handful of updates. Among these, support for Vulkan can be seen above all, but also improvements in the code for both audio and network.

With the new interfaces, higher potential for richness of detail, and above all better support for developers, will work closer to the hardware. The latter means, among other things, that both Vulkan and DirectX 12 have low overhead, which reduces the load on the system processor. The result is at best a higher frame rate on the same hardware compared to DirectX 11 or OpenGL.

According to the product plan, the updates will come in the autumn. First out will be version 5.2 with DirectX 12 in mid-August, while version 5.3 with Vulkan will be delayed until sometime in October.
