EVGA is preparing the new graphics card cooler ICX

American EVGA got it tough during the last quarter of last year when it was discovered that their graphics card with the cooling solution ACX 3.0 had inadequate cooling for, among other things, the power supply and memory circuits – something that in the worst case could lead to overheating. However, the company made sure to solve the problems through an updated BIOS version and new heating pads, which in practice remedied the heating problems even if the sound level under load had to take a hit.

During this year’s CES trade fair, EVGA reveals that they are almost finished with the next generation of graphics card coolers, where they have learned a lot from previous mistakes and at the same time improved on what worked well with ACX 3.0. ICX, as the new cooling device is called, is shown in the company’s suite at CES, but is otherwise shrouded in obscure current specifications as EVGA is waiting for a series of patents to be approved regarding the product.

The ICX cooler introduces along with four new graphics cards in the Geforce GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 families. These are the SC2 and FTW2 models, which follow the SC and FTW variants available on the market today. The former model is again based on Nvidia’s reference circuit board, although EVGA should have made some modifications with this. According to the company, FTW2 gets a completely redesigned circuit board in comparison with its predecessor.

Last but not least, the company is working to offer the current owners of SC and FTW some form of easy upgrade path to the new models. Exactly how or what this may include is, however, currently unknown.

EVGA’s graphics cards SC2 and FTW2 with the new ICX cooler are expected to be available during the first quarter of the year with a price tag just above their counterparts with the ACX 3.0 cooler.
