Experts told which devices are most often subjected to cyberattacks

MOSCOW, September 13 – PRIME. The number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices attacked in Russia from January to June 2022 increased by 40%, cameras and routers are most often subjected to DDoS attacks due to their prevalence and large number, Kaspersky Lab told RIA Novosti.

“Any IoT device can be the target of attackers, but cameras and routers are most often attacked (due to their prevalence and large number). Attackers build botnets from hacked devices, which are then used for DDoS attacks. At the same time, IoT malware is constantly updated , focusing in particular on new vulnerabilities in devices.

According to Dmitry Galov, cybersecurity expert at Kaspersky Lab, the number of cyber threats to the Internet of Things is growing every year, “both medical and industrial equipment connected to the Internet are at risk.” Moreover, from year to year, new versions of Mirai appear – a malicious computer network consisting of bots. It spreads on its own. With its help, a large-scale DDoS attack was organized, as a result of which the websites of Twitter, PayPal, Amazon, Netflix, CNN were inaccessible.

“According to Kaspersky Lab, from January to June 2022, the number of IoT devices attacked in Russia increased by 40%… As for the countries from whose territory attacks on IoT devices were most often recorded, Russia ranks second (in terms of the number also in the top 5 are China, the Netherlands, the United States and Pakistan,” added Kaspersky Lab.

It is specified that in terms of the number of unique IP addresses from which attacks were carried out, Russia is in sixth place. The top five are China, the USA, South Korea, India and Taiwan.
