Gas price ceiling will not reduce its cost, Polish minister says

MOSCOW, 30 Sep — PRIME. Limiting European prices for Russian gas will not reduce its cost, said Anna Moskva, Minister of Climate and Environment of Poland.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced the need to introduce a price ceiling for Russian gas. At the end of August, she announced that the European Commission was working on prompt and long-term measures to improve the situation against the backdrop of rising electricity prices in the EU, which mainly depend on the cost of “blue fuel”. The Council of Energy Ministers of the EU instructed the European Commission to prepare a project for the introduction of a gas price ceiling by October.

Moscow noted that on Friday in Brussels at a meeting of the EU Energy Council “there was a discussion about the maximum price for Russian gas.”

“Of course, this is more of a sanctions issue, more suitable for the European Union summit. In our opinion, and many other countries, the time has come for new sanctions on hydrocarbons. And gas would be a good step in this direction,” the Polish minister said.

In her opinion, the introduction of a price ceiling for Russian gas will not solve the problem of its high cost. Such an option, Moscow stressed, would rather become “discrimination for Europe and many other countries that have already become independent of Russian gas.”
