How much RAM do you need in 2018?

Optimal RAM capacity is by far one of the most discussed issues when upgrading or purchasing a new computer. Admittedly, the price of DDR4 modules has practically doubled in recent times, but that does not change the fact that the PC Master Race movement is still going on and its supporters will not recognize any compromises on performance. It turned out, however, that they do not have to spend a fortune on operating memory, because we do not need that much.

This time, the answer to the question of the like “How Much RAM Do I Need in 2018?”Linus Tech Tips replied. In his test procedure, he checked the performance of a system running on 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB of RAM. It turns out that a modest 4 GB is no longer even enough to browse the Internet with Chrome. However, in games… well, it turns out that these aren’t that demanding and their recommended requirements are enormously overstated.

Rise of The Tomb Raider, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and For Honor were taken under the microscope, and it turned out that only when leading our favorite archaeologist on the adventure, 4 GB of RAM were simply insufficient and resulted in clear frame drops below 10 FPS. Naturally, there was also an overflow of the default paging file set, which resulted in the application crashing. Deus Ex was also hit, but a bit less spectacularly, because the loss of frames per second oscillated around 20. As for For Honor, no significant difference was noted in his case. Similarly to the comparison of the gameplay smoothness between 8 and 16 GB RAM – the number of FPS was practically identical there and I have the impression that it was simply due to a measurement error.

So it looks like 4 GB of RAM will be sufficient for undemanding titles, as long as we regularly close and control programs in the background. In turn, 8 GB seems to be a certain limit that will allow you to play in virtually all titles without any stuttering. The case is a bit different when we use the computer as an ordinary workstation – then 16 GB seems to be a real minimum.
