Nvidia’s new GTX 1660 SUPER card has made essentially just a small improvement – they’ve taken the GTX 1660, replaced the slower GDDR5 memory with fast, new-generation GDDR6 memory, and added the GTX 1660 SUPER set-top box .

The 1660 SUPER has a slightly higher mining hash rate. The maximum overclocking of the 1660 SUPER is possible with the latest driver installed. At factory settings, the 1660 Super delivers 28 Mh/s at 95 watts. When overclocking, we raise the memory by 900-1300 Mhz, reduce the core frequency by 200-500Mhz and set the power limit to 70-75%. After overclocking, the 1660 SUPER hashrate rises to 32-34Mh/s, consuming 90-100 watts. This is the maximum hashrate of 1660 SUPER.

Cooling system

Let’s move on to the analysis of the video card itself. Palit uses exactly the same design as its early 1660 Ti Dual OC card.

Before us is a relatively compact card with 2 90mm coolers that cool the card. Do they manage it? You will learn more about this later in the article!

As for the casing itself, it is made of black, durable plastic. The card is well assembled, fits perfectly in the hand and there are no flimsy parts.

In terms of dimensions, the card is not that small: 235 x 115 x 40 mm, compared to the same 3-cool Gigabyte GTX 1660 SUPER Gaming OC 280 x 116.7 x 40.4.

Definitely a compact card, it’s only 2 slots thick and should fit almost all motherboards.

On the side, on the front side of the casing, we see the proprietary GeForce GTX logo, as well as two copper heat pipes.

Let’s move on to the back – the backplate, the card has it! It is made of plastic, which is typical for cards in this price range. The backplate is deaf, there are no cutouts or holes for additional air circulation.

Recall that the backplate will not help dissipate heat from the back of the board, but will provide additional rigidity and help protect the card from mechanical damage.

Internal cooling system

Let’s move on to the analysis of the video card itself. Let’s start by tradition with the grille.

As for the radiator grille, here Palit has a slightly unusual approach, since there is one contact plate for VRAM, GPU and VRM.

Simply put, a solid plate is attached to the one-piece radiator grill for additional cooling of VRAM, GPU and VRM. This approach differs from most others, since most other manufacturers simply attach 1 more small plate to the grill for additional cooling.

The plate dissipates heat from a one-piece grille through which 2 x 6mm copper heatpipes run. It’s not the biggest heatsink we’ve seen so far, so it will be interesting to see how the card performs in terms of cooling (temperatures) with this approach.

Please note that thermal pads are also attached to the plate itself, which serve as additional cooling for the memory and VRM.

Having detached the grille, we can see the printed circuit board. She looks very good.

Looking at the PCB of the card, we can see that Palit has chosen a design for VRM 3 + 2. For example, the Gigabyte GTX 1660 SUPER Gaming OC 4 + 2 VRM.

As for memory, here we have GBDDR6. The memory is supplied by Micron with model code ” 9PA77D9WCW “.

Since there are no changes to the GPU itself, we have the same ” TU116-300-A ” label as the GTX 1660.

Thermal photographs

All thermal images were taken under maximum load for a general idea and understanding of the cooling system with a slight overclocking of the core and memory.

Installing the thermal camera on top, we can see that the GPU temperature does not exceed 51 degrees – an excellent result.

Please note that the coolers do their job very well, the residual heat is dissipated and not stored inside the card.

Having installed the camera from the back of the video card, where the backplate is located, we see that the GPU temperature does not exceed 51 degrees. Excellent result.

Please note that the GPU temperature would still be a little lower if measured without a backplate.

How To Optimize: Memory and power consumption

Overclocking video cards for the Kawpow algorithm

Setting up video cards for KAWPOW is quite simple.

  1. first of all, we determine at what frequency the memory will operate maximum , in increments of +25 MHz. We find the one on which the video card driver starts to fly, and retreat from it 50 MHz down to a stable area.
  2. find the core voltage at which we are satisfied with the power consumption of the card. The lower the voltage, the less the card “eats”, while the lower the maximum speed. The dependence is disproportionate, usually when the consumption is reduced by 25-35% of the nominal value, the speed drops by only 15-20%. This gives us unique opportunities for automatic overclocking of video cards over time for multi-tariff meters.
  3. we find the maximum stable core frequency – also up +25 MHz – and retreat from it down 25 MHz.

Finer tuning will give us 2-6% extra speed or 2-4% power efficiency. Therefore, we will not dwell on it in detail in this article.
