Huawei develops a camera for smartphones with a variable aperture

Another patent filed by Huawei has appeared. This time it concerns a smartphone camera with a variable aperture consisting of 6 blades. This will give the user greater control over depth of field and exposure.

Huawei’s new patent

The variable aperture in smartphone cameras is nothing new, because it was already available in the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S10 models. Huawei wants to go a step further, using technology known from traditional cameras. According to LetsGoDigital, at the beginning of this year Huawei Technologies filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). A document called “Aperture, Camera module and Electronic Device” was released on August 19 and you can learn from it that Huawei wants to equip its smartphones with a camera with a variable aperture.

It is to use aperture blades, thanks to which it will be possible to control the light entering the camera. Huawei wants to use at least 6 leaves that can overlap each other, which will make the aperture larger. To take advantage of this technology, a miniature transducer will be used, supported by a drive coil and a driving magnet.

Technizo Concept graphic designer created 3D renderings based on documentation showing what a smartphone equipped with such a camera could look like. It is only his concept, because Huawei does not specify either in which smartphones the technology is to be used, or which cameras it will cover.
