MOSCOW, 29 Sep — PRIME. Japanese Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has developed a concept design for an advanced nuclear reactor for the SRZ-1200 nuclear power plant, which has increased safety, which takes into account the lessons of the Fukushima disaster, the company’s press service said.
The SRZ-1200 is an advanced 1,200 MW reactor “designed based on improved Japanese regulatory safety standards that take into account lessons learned from the Fukushima-1 accident,” the company notes.
The new reactor has additional safety features compared to conventional so-called pressurized reactors, explains Mitsubishi. In particular, the probability of release of radioactive substances into the environment in the event of a supposed accident has been significantly reduced.
It is noted that Mitsubishi wants to take this conceptual design and proceed with the technical design of the reactor in order to ensure the availability of new innovative nuclear technologies for a stable energy supply to Japan.
The possibility of adapting the SRZ-1200 for hydrogen production will also be explored.
