“Lack of Nvidia’s graphics card due to Samsung’s manufacturing”

If there is one thing that has characterized the technology autumn 2020, it is that large launches have been followed by a lack of access, which has affected everything from game consoles to processors and graphics cards. Nvidia was the first to impress customers with the architecture Ampere and the graphics card Geforce RTX 3080, and then to disappoint the same customers when the first round sold out within a few hours. The same applied to the siblings RTX 3070 and RTX 3090.

Reasons given for the lack of supply include that the pandemic around COVID-19 strained various parts of the production stage. The fact that the news was unusually popular has also been stated as the reason why supply has not been able to match demand. According to the industry magazine Digitimes, manufacturing problems at Samsung also play a major role in the problem.

The report states that the proportion of functioning graphics circuits (eng. yield) on Samsung’s 8-nanometer technology is remarkably low. The amount of working circuits is said to be so low that it has a significant impact on how many Geforce RTX 3000 cards Nvidia can produce. The report previously confirms rumors that Nvidia plans to divide manufacturing responsibility between Samsung and Taiwanese TSMC in 2021.

The competitor AMD is also drawn with extremely limited access to graphics cards in the Radeon RX 6000 series. AMD manufactures its graphics circuits at the above-mentioned TSMC, whose production of 7 nanometers has been operating stably since the summer of 2019, and the limited availability can thus not be explained by yield-problems with the company’s manufacturing partner.
