Linux update reveals AMD’s upcoming graphics card “Sienna Cichlid”

AMD’s long-awaited graphics card, which goes by the collective name Big Navi, is expected to give Nvidia competition in the performance segment. In addition to the graphics circuit itself being expected to be solid with a reported circuit area of as much as 505 mm², Big Navi is also expected to increase performance per watt by as much as 50 percent compared to Navi 10, which drives the graphics cards in the Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5600 series.

In an update log for AMD’s Linux drivers, references to an upcoming graphics circuit now appear – a Navi-based one which will be named “Sienna Cichlid”. News revealed in the drivers include the not yet released video decoder VCN 3.0. Also the DCN imaging unit, Display Core, takes a step up to version 3.

According to Phoronix, “Sienna Cichlid” is likely the upcoming RDNA 2-based “Big Navi”. The fish-inspired code name, on the other hand, should be a result of AMD developers giving the graphics circuits alternative names during the development stage to avoid revealing more details than necessary.

Judging by the drivers, AMD “Sienna Cichlid” does not seem to be integrated into the Linux kernel until version 5.9, whose implementation (merge window) begins in August, with a final launch date in October. This launch gap is in line with previous rumors regarding when Big Navi is expected to reach the market.
