MOSCOW, 9 Sep — PRIME. Some EU countries are afraid of Russian retaliatory actions, including the complete cessation of Russian gas supplies due to price restrictions, the Financial Times reported, citing EU officials.
According to the publication, about 10 EU states, including Italy, Poland and Greece, are putting pressure on Brussels to limit gas prices for all suppliers, not just Russia. The governments of these countries fear that the “singling out of Russia” may push Moscow to a complete cessation of supplies to Europe, the material says.
“Honestly, Russia will probably retaliate,” Nikos Tzaphos, special adviser to the Greek prime minister on energy issues, told the newspaper.
Earlier, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced the need to introduce a price ceiling for Russian gas. At the end of August, she also announced that the EC is working on prompt and longer-term measures to improve the situation against the backdrop of rising electricity prices in the EU, which mainly depend on the cost of blue fuel. According to Politico, citing European Commission documents containing proposals to overcome the energy crisis, the EU wants to limit the price of gas from Russia to 50 euros per megawatt-hour, but consider this measure risky.
