More 3DMark results show AMD “Big Navi” superior to Geforce RTX 3080

The countdown to AMD’s Radeon unveiling has begun in earnest and on Wednesday, October 28, it will explode. On the schedule is the fresh graphics card family Radeon RX 6000 “Big Navi” with the architecture “RDNA 2” under the hood. In connection with the presentation of the Ryzen 5000 series on October 8, AMD showed a first taste of what is to come, by showing gaming performance in 4K UHD with the Ryzen 9 5900X paired with a secret “Big Navi” card.

Since then, the information about the upcoming graphics cards has been hailed: In addition to information that the cards can absorb more than 300 watts, for example, leaked 3DMark results point to AMD’s models being able to beat Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 3080. Now reputable Igor Wallossek from Igor’s Lab writes that he has received more performance figures from the 3DMark suite, figures which are alleged to have been taken from tests performed by third-party manufacturers.

The tests refer to the Radeon RX 6800 XT card compared to Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 3080, something Wallossek compiles in a comparative diagram that shows relative performance. The test route includes Firestrike Extreme, Time Spy Extreme and it ray tracingtesting loop Port Royal, and all run in 4K UHD resolution. In Firestrike Extreme, AMD shows its front feet and pinches a convincing victory, 22.2 percent ahead of RTX 3080.

Also in Time Spy Extreme, AMD wins by a certain margin over Nvidia’s recent cards, but the margin drops to 3.2 percent over the Geforce RTX 3080. The second generation RT cores in the latter card show evidence of solid performance in the Port Royal test, when the card trumps the Radeon RX 6800 XT by 22 percent. However, AMD’s model performs slightly better than the Turing family’s top card.

In Wallossek’s article, the exact test results shine with their absence, as the source wanted to keep these secret. As a complement to the relative figures, approximate figures are presented instead, based on the percentage differences and Igor Wallossek’s own Geforce RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 3080 tests. The author also certifies that his own figures are similar to those he has received.

With this method, the Firestrike Extreme result is 13,066 points, while 8,232 and 4,438 points belong to Timespy Extreme and Port Royal. How this can be translated into real gaming performance, the future will show. It is clear, however, that Nvidia can in some respects gain a greater advantage when it comes to gaming experience, where for example ray tracing-playing can get better flow with the DLSS technology.

Igor Wallossek also suggests that AMD may have some extra aces up its sleeve with BIOS and driver updates. The recent data is in line with many of the previous ones, which can be summed up as “Big Navi” can seriously be compared to Nvidia in the top segment. Finally, however, it should be added that all early performance figures should be taken with a pinch of salt. The situation is becoming clearer as independent tests and official information roll out, with the latter taking place at 17:00 on 28 October.
