With the latest generation of graphics cards, AMD and Nvidia have chosen to go two completely different paths. While Nvidia rules unhindered in the top of performance, AMD has chosen to put all the gunpowder behind the entry-level segment, where they have so far been allowed to ravage freely. This looks set to change in the future.
At the launch of the Geforce GTX 1060, there was a lot of speculation that Nvidia was planning a model with only 3 GB of GDDR5 instead of 6 GB. That the graphics card will be released with less memory is confirmed during an Nvidia event, where it also appears that the company is carrying out another intervention to push the price.
Specifications: Geforce GTX 1060
Memory configuration | CUDA cores | Clock frequency | TDP |
---|---|---|---|
6 GB @ 8 GHz / 192-bit | 1 280 st. | 1,7 GHz | 120 W |
3 GB @ 8 GHz / 192-bit | 1 152 st. | 1,7 GHz | 120 W |
In addition to halving the amount of memory to 3 GB, the new variant of the Geforce GTX 1060 will get rid of 10 percent of the CUDA cores. Unlike the original, which has 1,280, the new one will come with 1,152 pieces, which also means that the number of texture units decreases from 80 to 72 pieces.
Like its full-scale siblings, the GTX 1060 with 3 GB retains the same clock frequency boost at about 1.7 GHz, which should provide performance around or just below the Radeon RX 480. The memory frequency is left untouched at 8,000 MHz with a 192-bit memory bus for bandwidth 192 GB / s and the TDP value remains 120 W.
When the launch of the Geforce GTX 1060 with 3 GB GDDR5 will take place is not yet known, but previous information suggests that it will be in the autumn. What the launch will look like, however, is an open question, as it is possible that it is only intended for prefabricated systems (OEM) or the Asian market.
