Mozilla seems to be testing background ads in Firefox Mobile

When you change the background images of Firefox Beta on Android today, you may notice that some of them are from the Disney Pixar movie Turning Red.

Twitter user ElPfaffanater was the first to spot the addition to the Firefox browser. Firefox Beta, the browser used by the user, showed two images from the upcoming Disney movie among the collection of background images.

Firefox Beta users can change the new tab page backgrounds with a simple tab on the Firefox logo on the new tab page. Ads were not displayed as the default background, but are part of the background collection.

A linked website, called True Colors, suggests that background images be linked to a campaign. The site has a Disney movie trailer, links to get Firefox, giveaways, sticky images, and a few other interactive elements. There is also an option to get the Turning Red theme for the desktop version of Firefox.

I’ve tried to replicate the find in Firefox for Android, but couldn’t. Neither Firefox, Firefox Beta nor Firefox Nightly displayed these backgrounds on my device. The campaign may be limited to a certain geographic region, for example the United States, or may be limited in other ways.

This is not the first time Mozilla has dabbled in media promotions. The infamous Mr. Robot campaign, which failed because of the way it was run, may come to mind.

Displaying backgrounds from movies, TV, games or comics in browsers and on desktop or mobile devices is quite popular. Some Firefox users will disagree with this, others may or may never like to see it, considering that backgrounds are not shown by default.

Mozilla needs to find ways to make money off of its search offerings. The organization has acquired or created several products that bring in millions of dollars in revenue, but pale in comparison to the money it receives annually from companies like Google.

Ads in Firefox are not valid for some users. Mozilla should consider adding a clear change to Firefox that prevents any type of advertisement from being added to the browser.

Mozilla has not yet confirmed the campaign and, for now, it should be tested. We don’t know the extent of the test or whether Mozilla is getting any compensation for it.
