MSI releases the Geforce GTX 680 Lightning

The MSI Geforce GTX 680 Lightning is the latest addition to the manufacturer’s model series for extreme overclockers. In the usual order, it is a graphics card with lavish components and a plethora of features, all to make it possible to scare up the clock frequencies to new heights.

The newcomer is based on the GK104 graphics processor with 1536 CUDA cores, 256-bit memory bus and 2 GB of GDDR5 memory. The graphics processor is overclocked to 1,110 / 1,176 MHz (base / boost) already from the factory while the memories remain at 6,008 MHz.

For those who are not satisfied with this, there is plenty of potential for overclocking. MSI removes all barriers in something called Unlocked Digital Power Architecture, which does not allow the TDP value to limit speeds. In addition, the manufacturer assists with “digital” voltage regulation that must be able to provide the graphics card with 200 percent higher power than the reference model.

The new Lightning is covered by a radiator with two fans that take up an extra card space. This construction is also slightly higher than normal, but should in return offer 16 ˚C lower temperatures and 6.7 dB lower noise level in comparison with the reference model. In addition, a metal plate appears on the back of the graphics card.

Last but not least, extra durable components can be seen according to the Military Class III concept, measuring points for voltages and automatic overclocking with “one touch”. The MSI Geforce GTX 680 Lightning will be on sale within a couple of weeks and is estimated to cost around SEK 5,500 including VAT.
