Nord Stream 2 will not help the country’s energy security, Khabek said

BERLIN, 19 Sep – PRIME. German Economy Minister Robert Habeck does not believe that Nord Stream 2 will play a role in Germany’s energy security in the foreseeable future.

“I agree, so far no scenario is foreseen in which Nord Stream 2 would play a role in Germany’s energy security,” said Habek, answering a media question whether he shares the point of view of the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Stefan Weil, who believes that Nord Stream 2 will never be launched to supply gas from Russia to Germany.

The press conference with the participation of Habek was broadcast on the official Facebook page of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern*.

On Monday Khabek paid a visit to the LNG terminal under construction in Lubmin.

Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the first terminal for receiving LNG in Germany will start operating in January next year, and from the end of 2023, Germany will be able to import LNG “at least” in four places: in the ports of Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbrüttel, Stade and Lubmin. According to him, this will allow Germany to become independent of gas supplies from Russia.

Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergei Nechaev, in an interview with RIA Novosti, said earlier that the return of Berlin and Moscow to their former cooperation in energy projects in the coming years is doubtful, not through the fault of the Russian side. At the same time, he also noted that Russia is ready to launch Nord Stream 2 even tomorrow.
