Due to compatibility with older software, x86 processors are the obvious choice in personal computers. Since Apple launched new laptops with its own ARM processor M1 and announced that they intend to completely replace the x86, more and more voices in the industry have talked about investing in taking ARM to personal computers outside Apple’s own ecosystem.
MediaTek is the world’s largest supplier of ARM chips, used to power everything from smartphones, Chromebooks, and smart TVs. We look forward to using our technology and working with NVIDIA to bring the power of GPUs to the ARM PC platform for gaming, content creation and much more. GPU acceleration will be a huge boost for the entire ARM ecosystem. – Rick Tsai, VD på Mediatek
Engadget now reports that Nvidia in collaboration with Mediatek wants to take Geforce RTX graphics cards for laptops with ARM processors. The duo is said to work on a common reference platform for developers, a laptop with support for Chromium, Linux and SDKs (Software Development Kits) from Nvidia.
Exactly what the collaboration means is not clear, but it is no big deal that it is Nvidia and Mediatek who intend to make ARM more accessible in personal computers. The announcement of the investment comes shortly after Nvidia announced the ARM-based server processor Grace, and a few months after information that AMD has resumed work on its own ARM architecture.
