Nvidia Geforce 3000 with throttled mining performance on input

Earlier in April, it emerged that Nvidia planned to update the graphics circuit GA106 housed in the Geforce RTX 3060, to prevent miners from buying up the consumer supply. The more ambitious change at the hardware level is said to come after failed attempts on the software side.

The idea was to stop supplying the circuit GA106-300, and instead start using one called GA106-302. By replacing the hardware and thus the graphics device’s PCI Device ID, compatibility with older drivers would be broken, and limiting new graphics cards to software that inhibits the performance of breaking cryptocurrencies.

Now Videocardz reports that the plan not only appears to be coming true, but is also being expanded. The entire Geforce RTX 3000 series, with the * exception of the Geforce RTX 3090, is expected to receive updated graphics circuits in future copies. Internally, the revised series is described as “Lite Hash Rate”, but apart from the limitation for miners, there should be no difference from previous cards.

All variants with a new circuit, from Geforce RTX 3060 up to the new Geforce RTX 3080 TI are said to have the new graphics circuits with a new PCI Device ID. The fact that Geforce RTX 3090 is not included may be due to Nvidia judging the model to be too expensive to be relevant for miners. The new variants are expected to appear at retailers sometime in June, but there are no official dates.
