Nvidia graphics chips (7nm) in 2020 through partnership with Samsung?

Samsung is preparing 7nm EUVs.

There have been many rumors that Nvidia will partner with Samsung to develop the next generation GPUs based on 7nm process technology, and now the rumors have been confirmed.

Nvidia Korea said it will release new GPUs using Samsung’s 7nm EUV (Extreme Ultra-Violet) node, according to a report from PCGamesN.

Nvidia just released its RTX Super graphics cards, the first batch of updates to its Turing architecture. However, these new GPUs are simply bumping up clock speeds and offering more CUDA cores for better performance – they’re all the same Turing GPUs. Nvidia’s 7nm products are likely to be a completely new generation, most likely Nvidia Ampere.

Samsung will provide samples of the new silicon to Nvidia and other partners by the end of the year, according to the report. This could help Nvidia launch graphics cards on a new node in 2020, as rumors suggest.

Not the only 7 nanometers

The move to 7nm will be a big step forward for Nvidia, as modern Turing processors are built on a 12nm node. But it’s worth noting that AMD has already moved to 7nm with their Ryzen and Navi products. Not only that, AMD has already released the 7nm Radeon VII, and the new Radeon RX 5700 and 5700 XT will be released on July 7, along with the new Ryzen 3000 processors.

By the time Nvidia releases a commercial GPU based on the 7nm process technology, AMD may have completed the next wave of 7nm products. Already, the RDNA architecture looks promising, and further development is likely to make it even more attractive.

In addition, AMD is expected to move to 7nm EUV in the future. All this means that the competition between AMD and Nvidia is likely to only grow. And given the upcoming Intel graphics cards, the big three could be incredibly exciting for PC builders.
