Phison showed a controller for PCIe 5 drives. We know the details of E26

SSDs for PCIe 4.0 have not yet fully entered the market, reaching only a few computer sets or PlayStation 5 consoles, and companies are already getting ready to introduce PCIe 5 drives on the market. Today, Phison showed his E26 controller, which will enable their operation, but do not expect an imminent debut of the equipped drives on the consumer market.

E26-based SSDs will appear on the market in the second half of 2022 and will be intended not for us (although Alder Lake processors will support PCIe 5.0), but for high-end client computers and enterprise-class mass storage devices. There, the increase from 16 to 32 GT / s (comparing PCIe 4.0 vs PCIe 5.0) will certainly be welcomed with open arms, accelerating very computationally demanding tasks.

The potential of PCIe 5.0 SSDs has recently been shown by Kioxia, whose prototype guaranteed sequential reading and writing of 14,000 MB / s and 7,000 MB / s. This type of performance translates into successively an increase of 103% in sequential read speed and 67% in writing. Was the E26 controller from Phison part of this prototype? We do not know this, but official information shows that it will reach for the Arm Cortex-R5 cores, which will be accompanied by accelerators belonging to the CoXProcessor 2.0 package.

The Phison E26 controller will support all modern and upcoming 3D NAND memory types with ONFI 5.x and Toggle 5.x interfaces at data transfer speeds up to 2400 MT / s. There will also be support for dual-port U.3 disk connectivity or I / O virtualization. On the manufacturing side, Phison will use a 12nm process and will soon ship its controllers to motherboard manufacturers to allow them to tune their hardware.
