Poland opposed EU coordination to reduce energy consumption

MOSCOW, September 9 — PRIME. Poland did not support the idea of European coordination to reduce energy consumption, said the country’s climate and environment minister, Anna Moskva.

Poland called for the introduction of a “ceiling” prices for all imported gas

“Today, we plan to discuss the topic of reducing energy consumption. Our situations are so different, consumption is so different, the situation of enterprises is so different that we do not see the need to coordinate the reduction,” she said, arriving in Brussels for a meeting of heads of energy departments of the EU countries.

According to Moscow, each country has within its competence the possibility of reduction and has mechanisms.

“We are absolutely in favor of leaving these decisions at the level of European countries without coordination. Such coordination will in no way be successful, and in some cases even have a negative impact on national markets,” the minister stressed.

On Wednesday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of decision-making in the EU in the field of energy, especially in a situation where circumstances are rapidly changing. He noted that in Europe there is a structural deficit in the decision-making process. You need a quick reaction, but everything happens slowly.

Moscow said that Warsaw is proposing the EU to temporarily cancel or freeze the price of carbon quotas at 32 euros per tonne.

“This is the price that is officially in the European documents and in the plans for the development of the ETS market for this and next year. Comparing this price with the price we have – 70, 80, 90 – we see that this market is developing uncontrollably, and there is no positive effects for the economy and enterprises,” the minister said.

According to her, Poland has also offered to give away some emission allowances free of charge to those sectors that need them most.

This week, the European Commission prepared a document for an extraordinary meeting of EU energy ministers, outlining a number of emergency and temporary measures that can be applied in the union to alleviate the situation on the energy market. Among them is the introduction of a price ceiling for Russian pipeline gas, the establishment of a mandatory goal to reduce electricity consumption during peak hours.
