Raspberry PI 3 reigns supreme in the DIY market. However, Asus has created a competition for it that seems to be much more efficient. The new product is called Tinker Board and it may cause a lot of confusion on the market.
The device is equipped with a Rockchip RK3288 chip operating at 1.8 GHz and having 2 GB of RAM. The competing Raspberry PI 3 has Broadcoam BCM2837, which has an operating frequency of 1.2 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. In the Geekbench benchmark, the Asus product scored 3925 and the competition 2092. Tinker board is therefore twice as efficient. Of course, it also has other things similar to the Raspberry PI 3, and sometimes even better, i.e. it has a Gb network card and HD Audio, bluetooth or Wi-Fi support. You can see the entire comparison in the table below.
The Asus product measures 8.5 cm x 5.6 cm. It also has four USB 2.0 ports, 3.5mm audio output and HDMI 2.0 supporting resolutions up to 4K. Its current price is around £ 55. By comparison, much less efficient competition costs around £ 34. Sales in North America will start on January 30, it is not known when the product will reach Europe.
