After months of rumors, AMD announced over the weekend the graphics circuit Tonga, which in practice replaces the aging Tahiti in the Radeon R9 280 series. In terms of performance, no world-changing changes are expected, however, the new graphics circuit will have improved energy efficiency, among other things.

Sapphire takes advantage of this with a model tailored for construction with motherboards according to the Mini ITX standard. The Radeon R9 285 ITX Compact Edition is just over 17 centimeters long and 11 centimeters high. The cooling consists of a number of heat pipes and aluminum flanges, which are cooled by a 100-millimeter fan.

The graphics card is based on Tonga Pro with 1,792 stream processors clocked at 918 MHz and there will also be an overclocked variant, which steps up by a paltry 10 MHz to 928 MHz. This includes 2 GB of GDDR5 memory at 5,500 MHz, for a memory bandwidth of 176 GB / s.

Other features are a BIOS button, which can be used to offer compatibility with older motherboards, as well as power supply via two 6-pin PCI Express. Finally, graphics cards come with video connections in the form of two Mini Displayport 1.2, an HDMI 1.4a and a Dual-Link DVI.

The Sapphire Radeon R9 285 ITX Compact Edition can be expected to appear on store shelves in connection with the launch of the Radeon R9 285, which takes place on 2 September. No price information for Sapphire’s model is available.
