SATA P210 and P220 SSD up to 4 TB

The solid storage unit market may be moving slowly towards the units. PCIe SSD with NVMe protocol. And it is not for less: they are considerably faster units than the models that use the SATA standard. Although, at the moment of truth, the differences in real life, the user experience, between both types of units, is minimal.

That is why a company like Patriot He has taken advantage of his visit to CES 2020, to present two of his new SATA SSDs: the model P210 and the model P220 Both manufactured as 2.5-inch units, instead of the M.2 slot standard.

The P210 model is the successor of the current Patriot P200 SSD that this company is manufacturing. It is therefore a SATA SSD, but with quite acceptable performance, as you can see in the following image.

There will be 4 sizes of storage available for this model: 256 and 512 GB, plus 1 and 2 TB as maximum internal capacities.

Rates of transfer They are typical of typical SATA SSD drives. Even so, it is interesting to see that, in models above 256 GB capacity, they are capable of reaching 555 MB / s in file reading. Although writing of these is where they falter most, not being able to reach 500 MB / s.

The Patriot P220 will only be available in 4 TB size

The next SATA SSD that Patriot has taken to CES 2020 has been the model P220

The memory controller it uses, the Phison S12, is a model developed specifically for use with NAND Flash memory of type QLC. Something that should not surprise us either, since the size of the storage unit is 4 TB. This size in the storage capacity of these SATA SSDs is quite large, and nothing common in the solid desktop market. Where, despite the huge decrease in the price of these units that we have seen during the past year 2019, their prices are still quite high. Especially for units of more than 1 TB.

The curious fact is that Patriot is also not very generous in the details he gives of the new P220 at CES 2020. He only lists one 4 TB size For this type of unit. Which leads us to assume that, at least initially, this will be the only size that will be available for purchase. Which is not an obstacle, of course, for the company to decide to launch smaller units to the market, later. Especially, because the market for 4TB units, given its price, is still quite limited for the normal PC user.
