MOSCOW, 29 Aug – PRIME. Sony Group Corp today announced that it will acquire Helsinki- and Berlin-based mobile game developer Savage Game Studios for an undisclosed sum. The deal is part of the Japanese conglomerate’s strategy to diversify beyond the video game console business.
Jim Ryan, director of the Sony video games segment, has outlined a plan to radically expand the gaming portfolio beyond the PlayStation 5 console and move away from the focus on single-player games. In particular, Sony plans to release more games for PC and mobile devices.
Savage Game Studios, a two-year-old real-time action game (LSG) game developer for mobile devices, will be part of PlayStation Studios’ new Mobile Games division.
The entertainment conglomerate hopes to capture a larger share of consumer spending on video games by expanding to other platforms and also hedge against the effects of technological change that reduces demand for bulky equipment.
“PlayStation Studios must continue to expand and diversify our offerings beyond the console, bringing exciting new games to more people than ever before,” said PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst.
Due to logistical issues, Sony is unable to produce enough PS5 consoles to keep up with demand. Last week, she announced price increases in many markets due to the strengthening of the dollar.
