Special lithium-ion batteries for energy storage are created

W Szkocji powstaną największe w Europie magazyny energii z połączeniem do sieci

Currently, the segment of energy storage is in an interesting place, because, in a way, at crossroads. It is extremely prone to revolutions and setting new standards on the basis of a number of potential solutions that have already been proposed and which are constantly evolving so that in the future the problem of energy storage is solved as best as possible. The manifestation of this are, among others special lithium-ion batteries for energy storage.

For many, lithium-ion batteries for energy storage are doomed to fail, but this does not discourage attempts

Stationary energy storage systems are key to bringing the world to “zero CO2 emissions by 2050”. Their task is to solve the problem related to renewable energy sources, i.e. the instability in their operation related to changing weather conditions. Currently, many standards and ideas are proposed for the development of energy storage, aiming to move away from lithium-ion batteries.

However, as part of the US Department of Energy’s BTMS Consortium, scientists from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are working on new designs for lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries tailored to the requirements of stationary energy storage.

We already know a lot about lithium-ion batteries, but batteries for different applications have different requirements. Our research examines how the achievements from research into electric vehicle batteries can be used for new applications in stationary energy storage systems

Said Yeyoung Ha, researcher and project manager at NREL.

So for now, this is only a harbinger of an attempt to improve the well-known chemistry and turn it into the most efficient energy storage possible. Currently, the researchers’ success includes reducing the use of electrodes (LTO anodes and LMO cathodes), and further plans include improving cathodes in particular.
