The most important mechanism boils down to the fact that when a molecule of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen comes into contact with sunlight, the atoms in it change their shape and turn into an energy-rich isomer that can be stored in a liquid form. The team at Chalmers developing this technology is currently working with scientists at China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University, who used a compact thermoelectric generator to convert this heat into electricity.
