Terrorists use Telegram to raise funds in cryptocurrencies

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), a non-profit research organization, reports that the Telegram messenger is often used by terrorists to raise funds in cryptocurrencies.

Analysts say social platforms, especially Telegram, are often used to raise funds by terrorists. In addition, Telegram will soon launch its own blockchain and cryptocurrency Gram, which can further spur terrorist organizations to use the messenger.

MEMRI notes that one of the Hamas divisions used Telegram, Facebook and Twitter to raise funds in bitcoins. In addition, in March, one of the jihadists posted a video on his Telegram channel urging Muslims to donate bitcoins to maintain a “holy war”.

Researchers have notified the US government and other Western countries about their findings. It is reported that the US Congress even sent a letter to the creator of Telegram, Pavel Durov, demanding immediate action against the use of the messenger by terrorists.
