The EC said that the EU will be able to save 50 billion cubic meters of gas in 2022

BRUSSELS, 18 Oct – PRIME. The European Union is able to save 50 billion cubic meters of gas this year if it continues to adhere to previously approved energy measures, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a press conference in France, broadcast on the EC website.

“If we continue to diversify away from Russian gas, continue to implement our measures, we will receive at least 65 billion cubic meters of gas from other sources, not from Russia, and also save 50 billion cubic meters by the end of the year,” she said.

According to the EC gas report for the fourth quarter of last year, the European Union consumed 412 billion cubic meters of this fuel in 2021.

Earlier this year, the European Union already agreed on a number of measures to resolve the energy crisis. In particular, a decision was made to save gas and electricity, to levy additional fees on the excess profits of certain companies operating in the field of fossil fuels, as well as to limit the profits of companies that produce electricity from cheap sources, for example, based on nuclear energy. The EU also adopted a law on a minimum threshold (80%, and from next year – 90%) of filling gas storage facilities by November 1. Now the average EU level of their filling is 92%.

On Tuesday, the European Commission presented a number of new energy measures, in particular, the introduction of mandatory general gas purchases.

These measures are being taken against the backdrop of high energy prices in the union. The EC’s latest Quarterly Gas Report reveals that retail gas prices for households in EU capitals more than doubled in August 2022 compared to the same period last year.
