The New York Times uses Blockchain to Fight Fake News

The New York Times, the second largest publication in the United States, confirmed its intention to use the blockchain to combat fake information.

Opportunities blockchain to deal with fake news, photos and videos are described on the project site The News Provenance. It is reported that the first phase of the project has already begun, and the Hyperledger Fabric was chosen as the blockchain platform.

Journalists point out that fake news is harmful to both large publications and small ones: “News consumers who have been deceived and misled often become apathetic to the news,” the website underlines.

By the end of 2019, The New York Times plans to provide a proof of concept, which is a solution for verifying rights to digital files. It is planned that the blockchain will store information about who, when and where the photo or video was taken, as well as how the image was edited and where it was published.

The idea is to “create a set of signals that will be available at any sites where an image or video is shown.” It is also about social networks, group chats and search engines. Note that in March of this year, the publication announced the search for a blockchain specialist and the development of PoS.
