The Unity game engine supports Nvidia DLSS

Earlier this year, a plug-in to the Unreal Engine 4 game engine was introduced that allowed developers to easily add Nvidia’s upscaling technology DLSS. During GTC 2021, it will be announced that the Unity game engine will also receive similar support for the technology. This is a built-in support in Unitys High Definition Render Pipeline (HRDP) which is mainly used for graphically heavy-duty projects.

DLSS increases performance by rendering a smaller number of pixels and uses artificial intelligence to scale the image with relatively few compromises on quality. It saves computing power which then in theory provides more performance space for other things, for example ray tracing. However, graphics cards from Geforce RTX 2000 or RTX 3000 series are required, as the technology depends on Nvidia’s Tensor cores to work.

When the add-on came to Unreal Engine 4, developers began to apply it quickly, implementation was simple to the point that it could be done on a weekend. It will be about a few keystrokes also for Unity, which opens up new opportunities for developers and players.

The game engine is widely used for the development of mobile games and by indie developers, partly because Unity has made various investments to reach and promote them. It is quite possible to develop AAA titles in Unity as well, but it is better known from titles such as the party game Overcooked and most recently the Viking game Valheim.

The first Unity-developed game to support DLSS is 24 Entertainment’s new Naraka Bladepoint. According to Nvidia, DLSS provides a performance increase of up to 60 percent and all tested graphics cards except RTX 2060 are able to deliver well over 60 FPS. The game is still in beta, but anyone who wants to try it can sign up for the next session on Steam.

DLSS support for Unity is planned for software version 2021.2. which will be launched at the end of 2021, but like 24 Entertainment, it is possible that other developers will have access to it before.
