Turkey assesses prospects for European consumption of Caspian gas resources

ANKARA, 3 Oct – PRIME. Transportation of Caspian gas resources to European markets could accelerate if the energy crisis deepens, Yeni Şafak columnist Erdal Tanas Karagöl said.

The transportation of Azerbaijani gas to Europe began at the end of 2020 with the commissioning of the last segment of the Southern Gas Corridor – TAP. At present, the buyers of Azerbaijani gas are Turkey, Georgia, Greece, Bulgaria, Albania and Italy.

“If the gas crisis between Russia and Europe deepens, that is, if the demand of European countries for the Southern Gas Corridor increases, the transportation of Caspian Sea gas resources to European markets may accelerate. It is clear that the Southern Gas Corridor is of vital importance for all European countries during this period, especially because it is an alternative.The increasing role of this corridor in ensuring the security of energy supply will also strengthen Turkey’s desire to become an energy center in the region,” the analyst writes.

After the start of a special military operation in Ukraine, the West stepped up sanctions pressure on Russia, which led to an increase in prices for electricity, fuel and food in Europe and the United States. At the same time, as Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out, the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy of the West, and sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy.
