US Customs Testing Blockchain PoC Tracking PoC

The U.S. Customs Service Advisory Committee (CBP) plans to launch a blockchain proof of concept test for intellectual property rights in the real world.

The Commercial Customs Operations Advisory Committee (COAC) will conduct testing from late August to late September in accordance with a report published on the CBP website. In particular, a statement was made by the COAC Sub-Committee for the Promotion of New Technologies, an organization of four working groups whose goal is to improve trade and governance within the CBP.

The subcommittee is currently participating in three blockchain proofs of concept. One of them is called “Proof of Concept for Intellectual Property Rights”. Within the framework of the project, supply chain management is tested through the blockchain, based on the pre-existing relations of the licensor and sublicensee.

According to the latest COAC report, this concrete proof of concept will be tested under real conditions starting in August:

“The working group actively collaborated with the proof of concept for intellectual property. Since the last personal meeting in March, the working group completed the general project, the implementation of the initial technical plan and the integration of Trade and CBP systems. “Testing the system in real conditions will begin in late August and end in late September.”

This project is not the first experience of interaction between the US Customs Service and the blockchain. In March it was reported that CBP would store
biometric information on the blockchain, and last June, the Factom blockchain-startup got
US Border Patrol Data Protection Grant.

In general, CBP, which proposed 14 ways to use blockchain in its operations back in 2017, has already tested the blockchain-based supply tracking system to determine how much technology can improve the process of checking certificates of origin from various partners in free trade agreements.
