MOSCOW, 19 Oct – PRIME. The world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is exploring the possibility of expanding its production in Japan, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources.
“Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is considering expanding its manufacturing facilities in Japan, which could be a move by the world’s largest contract chipmaker to reduce political risk,” sources told the newspaper.
The Japanese government, for its part, has signaled that it would like TSMC to expand its production in the country beyond the factory already under construction, sources said, but a decision has yet to be made and TSMC is weighing the pros and cons.
TSMC is already building a plant in Japan worth several billion dollars, which is provided by the Japanese government.
Earlier Wednesday, TSMC chairman Mark Liu also said that the trade conflict between China and the United States, as well as the growing tensions in the Taiwan Strait, create new problems for the semiconductor industry, and that Taiwan should step up development in this area.
