Youtube profile tests games in grainy 72p

For those who play and want to squeeze out extra frames or get a title to scroll on older hardware, it is common to have to thumb at detail levels and possibly lower the resolution. The Youtube channel Randomgaminginhd botanizes among both old and cheap hardware, to test which gaming experience can be evoked with a limited budget.

With the old entry-level cards AMD Radeon HD 6450 and Nvidia Geforce GT 710 in full swing, he takes the cuts to the extreme and presses the resolution down to 128 × 72 pixels – 72p. The comically low resolution blurs most of what is required to be able to enjoy a game, where both text and clear contours strike the foot. However, the jump from 720p to 72p shows, unsurprisingly, a real boost in performance.

The slimmer Radeon HD 6450 increases the average performance in Days Gone from the slideshow frequency of 3 FPS to the viscous 10 FPS, while the Fortnite with performance settings goes from 57 to 85 FPS. To access the resolution, however, the settings need to be adjusted through the game’s configuration file and the same approach is needed to customize Grand Theft Auto V and Cyberpunk 2077. The Geforce GT 710 offers 45 and 19 FPS on average in the latter titles, up from 33 and 9 FPS respectively.

Randomgaminginhd suggests that squinting with the eyes can improve the gaming experience, but is well aware that it is only with a twinkle in the eye that the heavily scaled-down image quality can be recommended. For comparison, the game console Nintendo Game Boy from 1989 boasts a sky-high resolution of 160 × 144 pixels, which is also used to display much less complex images than modern games.

Do you usually turn down the resolution to reach a certain frame rate and if so, in which games and at what resolution?
