Apple patented the use of a smartphone for identity verification instead of e.g. a passport

A new patent application for Apple was filed with the USPTO in March 2018. It was published on Wednesday under the name: “Document importation into secure element”. In a nutshell, a patent is designed to allow you to identify yourself using a smartphone.

The document provides detailed information on how the iPhone can use NFC or RFID to store personal data. Such information could be taken from a driving license document and then saved on the smartphone. If it is necessary to prove his identity, the user could unlock the phone and thus share his personal data.

The patent application shows the possibility of using this to show the customs officer your passport even though you would not have it physically with you. However, for this to happen, some countries would have to change the law because physical possession of the document is often required. Apple, if it wants to introduce this, will have to start talks with many countries.
