3D printing technology is still relatively new, so much so that it can be improved in many ways. The latest publication in the University of Michigan team’s Additive Manufacturing journal confirms this by going into the details of SmartScan, a special software that has made 3D printing so effective before.
SmartScan technology significantly improves the 3D printing process
SmartScan makes the 3D printing process, on the one hand, generate 41% less heat, and on the other hand, it reduces the chances of deformation by 47%. It also most likely speeds up the production process in two ways – by reducing the need to slow down printers to speed up cooling, and by significantly reducing the number of high temperature defects.
On the one hand, the SmartScan software ensures that the heat build-up in the area is eliminated by optimally directing the laser for a more even distribution of heat. As a result, prints made with SmartScan were consistently less warped and showed a more even heat distribution during the marking process than other methods.

Based on the results of the experiment, the team is confident that with further research it will be able to adapt SmartScan to create full 3D parts. Scientists also plan to further refine the software by incorporating the melting process of either metal or plastic powder into thermal modeling. They also intend to update the scan sequence while printing based on real-time temperature measurements with an infrared camera.
