Fortescue Future Industries’ latest collaboration with MMA Offshore aims to transform MMA Leveque into an ammonia-powered vessel. Of course, with this “completely green” ammonia, because it is obtained in an ecological way.
The plan is simple and boils down to converting the propulsion system of the 75-meter MMA Leveque so that it can run almost entirely on green ammonia by 2022. All this in a bid to achieve zero net emissions by 2040, of which MMA Leveque is one of the few ships that will be adapted to run on clean fuels.

The bet was on ammonia for a reason, because earlier this year, the FFI successfully demonstrated the combustion of ammonia in the locomotive. It is, in fact, one of the efforts to use ammonia in the form of a green fuel, albeit not without problems. Its massive combustion can be efficient, but at the same time it can lead to the formation of smog and acid rain.

The FFI is committed to helping the shipping industry “fully decarbonise” by providing “the maritime industry with a working knowledge of total decarbonisation”. According to the plans, the company, after rebuilding the MMA Leveque, will “show the shipping industry the power of a green ammonia-powered vessel under real conditions.”
