A magnetoelastic generator was developed. Here’s a way to make the human body a power source

Posted in journal Nature Materials An article about the work of scientists at UCLA introduces us to a new type of generator in the form of a platinum-catalyzed silicone polymer that generates energy by squeezing it. It differs from piezoelectric solutions at the very bottom, and could revolutionize the wearable gadget market.

The magnetoelastic generator has entered a new level thanks to its higher flexibility

A new flexible generator developed by scientists uses the magnetoelastic effect to work. It still requires just crushing its structure to work, but during it it separates or presses together nano-scale neodymium-iron-boron magnets inside. It generates electric current by changing the strength of the magnetic field and is completely resistant to moisture.

This phenomenon is nothing new, but previously magnetoelastic generators were constructed from metal alloys that were too stiff to be worn comfortably on the body. That’s why it’s so revolutionary that the newly developed gear is soft and flexible enough to be worn on frequently-moving parts of the body.

In tests, attaching this generator to the elbow with a silicone band provided an electric current of 4.27 milliamperes per square centimeter with elbow movements. It has also been shown that the device is sensitive enough to convert the heart rate into electrical signals, suggesting the invention of a sensor that constantly accesses power directly from the human body.
