AMD big winner in the graphics market during the second quarter of the year – Nvidia loses

Despite coin diggers seeking faster and more efficient specialized circuits (ASICs) to generate, for example, Bitcoin, the graphics card market increased during the second quarter of the year. Figures from Jon Peddie Research reveal that the number of delivered graphics solutions increased by 3.2 percent on a quarterly basis, but at the same time show a decrease of 4.5 percent compared to the same period in 2013.

The winner for the quarter is AMD, whose deliveries increased by 11.1 percent compared to the first quarter. This can be compared with a growth of 4.1 percent for Intel and a decline of 8.3 percent for arch-rival Nvidia. The market shares include integrated as well as dedicated graphics solutions, of which the latter category is used in 32 percent of all delivered computer systems.

Perhaps most interesting is that deliveries of stationary dedicated graphics cards fell by as much as 17.5 percent towards the first quarter of the year – something that can largely be attributed to the coin diggers’ transition to ASIC solutions. On the other hand, deliveries of dedicated graphics cards for laptops from Nvidia and AMD increased, with deliveries increasing by 6.9 and 30.6 percent, respectively.

While it is clear that a shift is taking place in the distribution between different segments of the graphics market, the annual growth rate (CAGR) is expected to be more or less zero. In 2017, an estimated 418 million graphics solutions will be delivered, compared to the estimated 414.2 million for 2014.

The figures from Jon Peddie Research includes dedicated and integrated graphics solutions for desktops and laptops, commercial, industrial, scientific and embedded systems. The report also includes x86-based tablets, but not servers, game consoles and ARM-based tablets.
