AMD Fidelity FX Super Resolution to Radeon and Geforce on June 22nd

Playing in higher resolution no longer has to mean that the graphics card has to work harder, where Nvidias Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) can now convert lower-resolution images to versions that reach almost the same level as the originals. However, the function requires graphics cards with Tensor cores, which in the consumer way means the Geforce RTX 2000 or RTX 3000 series.

AMD’s answer to DLSS is Fidelity FX Super Resolution (FSR) and the company dedicates part of its presentation on Computex 2021 to the function, which looks forward in less than a month. Similar to investments such as Freesync, AMD chooses to make the upscaling function a freely available solution, which in theory lets in all graphics cards and processors with built-in graphics.

The company explains that FSR comes in four levels so that users have some freedom of choice in the balance between eye candy and performance. The levels are Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced and Performance, where the latter aims at the highest possible frame rate and thus the worst frame quality. Of the image AMD exemplifies with, the levels offer 59, 102, 153 and 206 percent higher frame rates with the game Godfall in 4K UHD with Radeon RX 6800 XT.

The numbers should normally be taken with a pinch of salt when the sender also provides the products and software used, but it gives an indication that the frame rates can be screwed up a lot. Whether the image quality meets clear deteriorations is difficult to determine based on a still image.

For those who do not have a Radeon RX 6000 card in the computer case, AMD also exemplifies what Fidelity FX Super Resolution can achieve with one of the world’s most common graphics cards: Geforce GTX 1060. In 1440p resolution with the detailed mode “Epic”, the card performs 27 FPS in Godfall, while the middle position Quality turns the average by 41 percent to 38 FPS.

FSR will be available on June 22 and then on over 100 graphics cards and processors. During the year, ten game studios game engines will implement the technology, which with a hardware-independent character according to AMD will mean less work for the game developers. In addition to Godfall, it is unclear which titles will be early with the upscaling technique, but this will be presented together with more details at a separate presentation held on 22 June.
