AMD Radeon HD 7990 “Malta”

Already at the end of 2011 when AMD announced the Radeon HD 7970, the company promised that more was going on, not only in the lower segment but also in the absolute top tier. Since the launch of the Radeon HD 3000 series, AMD has invested in graphics cards with dual graphics processors – and so it would be this time as well.

After the launch of the Geforce GTX 690, however, there was silence from AMD’s side, and rumors abounded wildly that the company had returned to the drawing board to develop a solution that could trump Nvidia’s. Several months later, it became clear that the Radeon HD 7990 “New Zealand” would never become a reality. Instead, partner manufacturers were given free rein to develop their own solutions with dual Tahiti XT, which resulted in, among other things, Asus ROG Ares II and Powercolor Devil 13.

Now AMD is making a complete U-turn and taking new steps with its own Radeon HD 7990 under the code name “Malta”, where the focus is on the Geforce GTX 690 and the performance throne. Due to a substantial memory buffer and high bandwidth, the graphics card should be suitable for gaming in really high resolutions and on several screens. The big question is whether the company’s efforts reach all the way.
