The movement that will be carried out for next year already has a name, "Kalamata Project", and is a stick for Intel by losing one of its biggest partners.
At the same time, Apple has gotten into the wolf's mouth, since it replaces the processors of the blue giant with a new SoC that is hardly justifiable in terms of pure performance under X86 and especially, in price.
Apple may be digging its own grave with ARM
How does Apple plan to tell its users to pay huge amounts of money when their products are going to be based on just over two years of ARM technology? It's the big million dollar question. It is true that with ARM and their own design they will have more control of the hardware in reference to their software, it is true that ARM dominates the mobile market, it is true that Microsoft has its Surface pro x ARM, but is that Apple sells a type of product where its market and competition are themselves.
There is talk that the chip will integrate a 12-core CPU where four of them will be IceStorm (very efficient) while the remaining eight will be of type Firestorm (high performance), all of them designed by the company. Is this the excuse to sell your products?
Lower prices on your products at the cost of worse performance?
The first step that Apple must fully implement is to port all of its software towards the ARM architecture and achieve performance that is expected. More muscle without optimization is not a strategy that is successful in either the short or long term.
So Apple has been working on the transition for a long time, the doubt is the end result. What seems clear to analysts is that the company will cut costs by 40-60%. The lower consumption of the ARM processor will allow for lower quality materials and in lesser numbers, so there is speculation about a possible drop in prices, something difficult to believe in Apple, especially in a sector where it does not feel threatened, such as that of smartphones.
On the other hand, if Apple maintains current prices, it will be criticized for it. The power of their equipment will not be greater than that offered by Intel with almost total security, the costs for them are much lower and the quality of their equipment today is highly questioned from the outset.
Intel undoubtedly loses, but how Apple approaches the situation can be decisive for its credibility as a premium brand, something that its latest generation devices are not reflecting and that they are being overcome on several fronts and with problems of all kinds.
