Cryptominers massively buy RTX 3000 laptops in China for Ethereum mining

Even laptops are mining amid the cryptocurrency boom.

As the price of Ethereum has tripled in recent months, crypto miners from China have found it profitable to buy new Nvidia GeForce RTX 3000 laptops to mine the world’s second largest cryptocurrency.

According to a post by BTCer user on the Chinese social network Weibo, several photos with the new RTX 3000 laptops show them hard at work with Ethereum.

After tripling in value only since November last year, coupled with the limited supply of RTX 3000 desktop graphics cards commonly used in crypto mining, the new RTX 3000 mobile GPUs could be a viable option for miners.

It also means that the availability of new graphics cards is even more limited for anyone looking to a new RTX 3000 laptop like the Gigabyte Aero 17 (2021) or Alienware m17 (2021), at least in China. So far, there are not many reports of laptop shortages, but given that the supply of desktop RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070, RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 is still far below demand, so a similar problem with laptops is only a matter of time, the user is increasingly disadvantaged.

Crypto mining could bite off RTX 3000 laptops

The RTX 3000 laptop market is facing some pressure in China, but the good news is that things won’t be as bad as the desktop graphics market. As Videocardz reports, RTX 3070 laptops are not cheap at all, and the profitability of mining Ethereum on dozens of brand new Ampere laptops is largely dependent on the walking prices of cryptocurrencies.

This makes laptop mining more sensitive to price fluctuations, which are much better at holding back cheaper desktop graphics cards. A laptop with an RTX 3070 can cost three times as much as a PC graphics card, not to mention that a mobile graphics card will not be as powerful, meaning you won’t be able to make the same profit from mining cryptocurrency.

That is, of course, if you find an RTX 3070 desktop graphics card. It’s much easier to do this in China, where most of Nvidia’s manufacturing partners are located. There are more opportunities for buying a video card directly from the factory, but in China there is a problem with stocks.

We hope this doesn’t affect the launch of RTX 3000 laptops outside of China. However, if cryptocurrency prices continue to rise, laptop availability could drop further.
