Intel High Definition Audio (Intel HD Audio) is a technology that delivers the same audio quality from integrated audio as a separate sound card. Intel Express Chipset motherboards, which are equipped with Intel Integrated HD Audio, can reproduce multi-channel audio in better quality than previous integrated audio formats.

When Codec ’97 analog technology was introduced, users were able to play audio and video containing stereo sound. DVD video brought with it Dolby Digital sound and multichannel DTS audio formats that AC ’97 could barely handle.
