GDDR6 memory is much more expensive than GDDR5

We often complain about the slow implementation of new standards in the latest product series, while fighting for their lower price, although we do not always realize that new products simply cost money. An example of this are, among others the latest graphics cards, because the local GDDR6 memory is much more expensive than GDDR5.

Nvidia, however, decided to go through the expectations of the lowest price and packs GDDR6 chips even in the unannounced RTX 2060. However, not to everyone, because this version of Turing is also to debut in the release with GDDR5 on board. However, this does not change the fact that according to the 3DCenter report, which takes into account the prices from the DigiKey warehouse, Micron Technology’s 14 Gbps GDDR6 memory chips cost over 70% more than the 8 Gb / s GDDR5 of the same density and from the same manufacturer. Of course, this does not give the final insight into the actual production price of both systems. All because of the obsolescence and oversupply of GDDR5, which lowers their prices so much that the barely breaking GDDR6 market performs really poorly in this respect.

Not only Micron!

Although there are slower variants, 13 and 12 Gb / s, Nvidia focuses only on the (currently) fastest. Therefore, we can conclude that the leaks on the six RTX 2060 variants differing in the VRAM subsystem are real. Ultimately, the price difference can be as high as PLN 100, because according to the comparison – six GDDR5 bones cost 22 bucks less compared to the GDDR6.
