Graphics card sales are going like clockwork – increasing by 13.4 percent in one year

It is almost exactly one year since Nvidia launched the architecture Ampere and Geforce RTX 3000 series, with which RTX 3080 was first out. Since then, there has been a great shortage and graphics cards have been virtually impossible to obtain. Only now are the first signs that a clearing is in sight, but the supply is inevitably still low and the prices high.

The fact that there has been a long-term shortage does not mean that there have been no graphics cards. On the contrary, the latest analysis from Jon Peddie Research shows that the number of graphics cards delivered increased by 13.4 percent during the second quarter of the year compared with the same period in 2020. The analysis report compares growth with processors, which increased by 8 percent during the same period.

That the sale of graphics cards goes like the train is not only about the volumes but also the prices. While the number of graphics cards delivered increased by 13.4 percent, sales increased by as much as 79 percent during the period – from 6.6 to 11.8 billion dollars. This means that the price per graphics card has risen by an average of almost 58 percent.

While these are gratifying figures for AMD and Nvidia, it is a decline from the top in the first quarter of 2021, where the market for graphics cards had a total value of as much as 12.5 billion dollars. The figures for the second quarter thus mean a decline of 2.9 percent, albeit from very high levels.

The report states that both AMD and Nvidia are winners during the period, but that Nvidia has pulled the longest straw. Since the first quarter of 2021, the company has increased its market share from 79.7 to 80 percent, which can also be compared to a market share of 78 percent in the second quarter of 2020. AMD accounts for the remaining 20 percent of the market in terms of volume.
